- Professor of Men's Health, University of York
I am a Professor of Men’s Health focused on improving the way healthcare supports men by creating practical, evidence-based solutions that help them engage with health services. My research, spanning over 20 years, examines how masculinity influences health behaviours and works to break down the barriers that can prevent men from seeking help, driving practical, policy-relevant interventions.
My work is applied and impact-driven, focusing on improving public health policy and designing services that better meet men's needs. Currently, my research centres on improving access to proactive early mental health interventions for men. I lead projects funded by Movember—such as BALM (www.balmprogramme.co.uk), delivering mental health support to men in workplaces, and Performance Habits (www.performancehabits.org), tailored to elite sporting environments. I also lead NIHR-funded research focused on the development of gender-responsive support for men living with long-term conditions.
I began my career as a Registered Nurse in Coronary Care Units in Birmingham and Leeds, before earning my PhD at the University of Leeds in 2006, examining the role of masculinity in men’s help-seeking for cardiac chest pain. My academic career has included positions at the University of British Columbia (Canada) and the University of Sheffield, before joining the University of York in 2011.
