Paul is a Research Fellow, in the Institute of Community and Human Services, at Rikkyo University. He is also a Special Project Researcher, in the Center for Foreign Language Education and Research, also at Rikkyo University. Has taught in university courses, and held academic positions, at nine universities/colleges, in thirteen academic departments/programs (seven in Japan, four in Australia, one in New Zealand, and one in Burundi).

His research and teaching focuses on peacebuilding, human rights, Israel-Palestine, and peacebuilding and development education through active learning. Specifically, his research covers areas of the Israel-Palestine conflict; peacebuilding; conflict resolution and Interactive Conflict Resolution (ICR); human rights; peacebuilding and development evaluation; peace journalism and communication; peacebuilding and development education through simulations, active learning and project studies; and how rights-based and relationship-based approaches to peacebuilding can be integrated within peacebuilding and development. For his research on Israel-Palestine Paul has been awarded the Isaac Roet Prize on Fostering World Peace Through a Better Distribution of World Resources, presented by the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Amsterdam and Economists for Peace and Security.

Paul's writing and interviews have been published by a range of media outlets, first in the Critic Te Ārohi (the official magazine of the Otago University Students' Association), and then in other outlets including, as well as the Conversation, the New York Times, United Press International, The Wire, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Sydney Morning Herald, Dominion Post, New Zealand Herald, Waikato Times, Islam Bergerak, Informed Comment, New Matilda, Online Opinion; public, commercial and independent TV and radio (in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, the UK, Russia and Iran); as well as the Ethics Centre and the Sydney Peace Foundation.

He began his education in peacebuilding as a teenager through the traditional Japanese budo (martial art) of Aikido and has since been awared the rank of Shodan (teaching qualification of Black Belt) in Daito Ryu Aikibudo (Bihoro-Cho Dojo) and 3rd Kyu (Blue Belt) in Riai Aikido. He has also spent time training in the New Zealand Army Reserves. He hold practitioner or facilitation (train the trainer) certifications in negotiation, conflict resolution, mediation, organisational team facilitation, corporate coaching (Level 1, Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership),and the Alternatives to Violence Project.
