Dr. Patryk I. Labuda is an assistant professor at CEU in Vienna. His work lies at the intersection of international law, peace and security studies, and global history. He holds a PhD in international law from the Geneva Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.

Dr. Labuda has 2 main areas of expertise:
(1) how global governance actors, especially international criminal tribunals and UN peace operations, impact domestic law and politics, with a focus on central Africa;
(2) double standards in international law and Second World approaches to international law, which inform my work on shifts in the global order from a post-colonial Global South-East(ern European) perspective.

Dr. Labuda has published on various doctrinal legal debates, ranging from the troika's personal immunities and the UN Security Council’s Chapter VII powers to complementarity at the International Criminal Court.

As a former rule of law practitioner, Dr. Labuda supports justice initiatives and promote dialogue between the Global South(s) and Global East(s), drawing on more than 10 years of work and research experience in Africa, with a regional focus on the law, politics and history of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and the Sudans. He uses interdisciplinary methods to study how international institutions interpret legal norms to achieve public policy aims. Dr. Labuda's writing consists of over 30 publications and 50 shorter pieces, including an award-winning book with Oxford University Press (2024 ABILA 'Best Book Award for a First-Time Author') and an award-winning article in the Yale Journal of International Law (2025 ASIL 'International Criminal Law Scholarship Prize'). His research has also featured in prestigious journals like the Leiden Journal of International Law, European Journal of International Law, Journal of International Criminal Justice, Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law, Journal of Conflict & Security Law, Journal on the Use of Force & International Law, and edited volumes with leading academic presses.

Dr. Patryk I. Labuda est professeur en droit international et relations internationales à l'Université d'Europe centrale à Vienna. Dr. Labuda s'appuie sur des méthodes interdisciplinaires pour étudier comment les institutions internationales interprètent les normes juridiques pour atteindre les objectifs publiques. Il se spécialise dans le droit international, peace and security studies, et l'histoire globale. Dr. Labuda a 14 ans d'expérience de travail et de recherche en Afrique, avec un accent régional sur le droit, la politique et l'histoire de la République démocratique du Congo, de la République centrafricaine, du Soudan et du Soudan du Sud. Ses recherches actuelles portent sur les impacts trans-régionaux de la guerre en Ukraine, notamment sur le plan de la gouvernance mondiale et les relations entre le « Sud global » et « l'Est global » (surtout les pays de l'Europe de l'Est et l'Afrique).

Son premier livre « Les tribunaux pénaux internationaux et la justice nationale. Dans l'ombre de la Cour (en anglais: International Criminal Tribunals and Domestic Accountability: In the Court's Shadow » (Oxford University Press), a reçu le prestigieux prix "Best Book Award for a First-Time Author" de l'Association de droit international (ILA). Ses travaux ont aussi été publiés dans le Leiden Journal of International Law, le Yale Journal of International Law, le European Journal of International Law et le Journal of International Criminal Justice. Patryk contribue régulièrement à la télévision, à la radio et aux podcasts. Il est titulaire d'un doctorat de l'Institut de hautes études internationales et de développement à Genève.
