Oliver was studying for his PhD through a NIHR funded studentship looking at self-harm and suicide in males compared to females. He was based in the Centre for Mental Health Research and supervised by Professor Rose McCabe and Dr Kirsten Barnicot.

His project looked at the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for self-harm in males compared to females.

Oliver had masters' degrees in Health Psychology and Public Health and a bachelor's in Psychology.

He previously worked in both mental and physical health, including within research in both of these; sat on steering/advisory groups for a number of studies; and on an NHS Research Ethics Committee for over 4 years.

Oliver died in July 2026.
