Nora V. Demleitner

(she/her)

I am the president of St. John's College, the third oldest college in the United States, located in Annapolis, MD, and with a second campus in Santa Fe, NM. It is a residential, four-year liberal arts college with a distinctive curriculum based on a flipped classroom, discussion-based pedagogy around the Great Books. It requires four years of mathematics, science, political science, law, philosophy, theology, and literature, and also offers a Master's in Liberal Arts.

My background is in law, with a law degree from the Yale Law School and a Master's in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown Law Center. Most of my research--with scores of articles and lead authorship in a law casebook on Sentencing: Law & Policy--has focused on sentencing and collateral sanctions, often in a comparative context.

As president of a liberal arts college, I now work on liberal arts and higher education related issues.

I sit on the executive board of the Maryland Independent Colleges and Universities Association (MICUA), on the board of the Collateral Consequences Resource Council (CCRC), and am a member of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities'(NAICU) accountability committee. I am an elected member of the American Law Institute (ALI) and the European Law Institute (ELI) as well as the International Society of Comparative Law.
