Noah Eliot Vanderhoeven

(He/him)

I have an Honours Double Major in Political Science and Economics at Huron University College. I then went on to get my Masters in Political Science at Western University. I successfully defended my PhD dissertation at Western University in August 2026.

I am a trained political behaviouralist with a special interest in how social identity is formed and connects to social cognition that affects political attitudes relating to marginalized groups. The central focus of my research agenda is the development of public policy attitudes towards initiatives related to women, the LGBTQ+ community and racial minority groups, specifically studying masculine identities, how citizens perceive sports organizations and athletes engaging in social activism to influence public policy and acceptance of these historically marginalized groups.

I am well versed in statistical methods including linear regression, maximum likelihood estimation with generalized linear models, time-series cross sectional analysis, Bayesian statistics, text analysis with dictionaries and generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs), and experimental methods. I am also trained in qualitative methods, such as interviews, focus groups, case studies, archival work and qualitative text analysis using NVivo. I have completed comprehensive exams in Canadian politics, comparative politics, political psychology and experimental methods..

These aspects of my methodological training allow me to easily interpret and mobilize research results in my own work and work on collaborative projects to help ensure research findings are developed into manuscripts, and the results are shared strategically and widely in technical reports and knowledge mobilization efforts. I have published extensive public-facing work with The Conversation and the Montreal Gazette, which has also led to numerous radio and television appearances with CBC Radio across Ontario, Global News in Toronto, Calgary and London, and CBC News Network nationally. I am sought out for comment on news involving sports and politics, with a particular focus on the role of sport in Canadian identity and multiculturalism.

In particular, I have developed an understanding of why this current political moment amidst tense relations with the United States that has seen Canadians turn to sports to foster an identity of resistance to the United States under Donald Trump.
