My research focuses on the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms of motivation and reward. In particular, I study how individuals evaluate effort–reward trade-offs and learn when a prospective benefit is worth pursuing. The overarching goal of my translational research is to develop innovative approaches to improve aberrant motivation and goal-directed behavior in patients with reward dysfunction.
I am a trained psychologist and obtained my PhD from TU Dresden in 2013. After postdoctoral training at TU Dresden and the John B. Pierce Laboratory at Yale University, I joined the University of Tübingen, where I established a research group focusing on non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation. In 2022, I was appointed W2-Professor of Medical Psychology at the University of Bonn, where I head the Section of Medical Psychology at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.
