My first degree was from the University of Leeds, then I moved to Manchester University for my PhD, studying membrane protein called carnitine palmitoyltransferase. After a postdoc in the USA I returned to the UK, working at the University of Cambridge and MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. Then I spent three years as a lecturer at the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff before moving to Leicester University. During my time at Leicester I have also held a travelling research fellowship at Harvard University and Visiting Scientist at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology. My current interests are in protein function, structure, and adaptability. I use evolutionary and protein engineering techniques to better understand biology and to develop novel proteins for medicine and biotechnology.
