Dr Nicholas Tochka is Senior Lecturer in Music (Ethnomusicology) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne. A historian and ethnographer, he researches popular, traditional, and art musics in Europe and the Americas, with a particular emphasis on the politics of music-making since 1945. In 2016, Oxford University Press published his first book, Audible States: Socialist Politics and Popular Music in Albania. He is currently working on a second book manuscript, Rocking in the Free World: Popular Music and the Politics of Freedom in Postwar America, as well as smaller projects on music and citizenship, record collecting, and cartoon music. He plays bass, ukulele, and a little bit of guitar.
