Nicholas Carter is a biogeomorphologist and lecturer at the University of Oxford. His primary area of research centres on the relationships between organisms (mainly lichens) and the physical environment, especially in the fields of weathering, landscape evolution and architectural heritage conservation.

His current interdisciplinary work with OxRBL (Oxford Resilient Buildings and Landscapes Laboratory) seeks to challenge the way we see stone, as well as explore the bioprotective effects and ecological and cultural value of saxicolous lichens in landscapes and on the facade of historic buildings, so advancing nature-based solutions for conservation initiatives. His book, 'Living Stone', about seeing stone differently will be published by Penguin Books in Spring 2028.

He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London.
