Many people with disability – who are at increased risk of illness and death from COVID – continue to isolate at home to avoid infection and are effectively shut out of society.
At times when COVID numbers are increasing, allowing infectious people to mingle freely at work and socially will create epidemic growth and make the crisis even worse.
With the goal of ‘business as usual’, politicians will continue to reduce COVID protections without immediate consequence while transmission is low. But then the next wave will come.
Despite rising cases and deaths, governments are have not even raised the prospect of imposing some public health restrictions.
We shouldn’t aim to let infections run wild. We should aim to ensure most Australians never encounter the virus at all, or if they do, to not be infected by it.
It’s simply not “safe” for many Australians to come out of Scott Morrison’s proverbial cave until vaccination rates increase.
With the reality of the COVID situation in Australia, particularly in New South Wales, some older adults could literally die waiting.
Chance matters. It’s unlikely Victoria is doing anything that ‘makes us’ more likely to have outbreaks leading to lockdowns.
