Ilman is an expert in coastal and marine ecosystem management with over 20 years of experiences in Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Currently working as the Director of the Indonesia Oceans Program at Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara, the Nature Conservancy's main partner in Indonesia.
Ilman specializes in integrating biodiversity conservation and nature-based climate solutions with sustainable community livelihoods in aquaculture, fisheries, and tourism. Ilman is the lead inventor of the pioneering SECURE (Shrimp Carbon Aquaculture) approach, a model designed to resolve land-use conflicts between mangrove conservation and aquaculture. His research and publications focus on blue carbon and mangrove land-use changes, including the development of practical guidelines for mangrove ecological restoration.
