Miyopin Cheechoo

  • PhD Student, Curriculum and Pedagogy, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto

Firstly, Miyopin Cheechoo is an enrolled member of Moose Cree First Nation, ON, and her grandparents are the late Lawrence and Helen.

Miyopin resided in Moosonee and Moose Factory until 2021, where she worked as the former Youth Councillor. Leaving to pursue higher education, she had moved to Toronto in 2018, then returned home during the pandemic. In between Toronto and her Nation homelands, she has earned an h.BA in Indigenous Studies and Art History at UofT, a Master of Teaching at OISE, and is currently in the midst of completing her PhD at OISE.

Her research in Indigenous feminist studies, in tandem with her lived experience, bring forwards an often marginalized perspective within educational studies. Through the collaborative work within the Indigenous Literatures Lab, along with the gift of consistent mentorship from her Spirit and family relatives, her work does not stand alone and is present in the larger ecology of the Indigenous community.
