Ming Gao

Dr Ming Gao is a research scholar of East Asia studies.

He joined Lund University from the Australian Catholic University and Monash University, where he currently also holds affiliations. In addition, Ming was a research fellow at Seoul National University, and a visiting doctoral student at Tokyo Kokugakuin University.

He holds a Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore. He also studied at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) with support from the United States-Japan Foundation. He has received several fellowships, including one awarded by the POSCO TJ Park Foundation.

His recent research is forthcoming in the field's leading journals, including the Journal of Global History and Social History.

He has written for well-known publications spanning policy, media, and public scholarship, including invited contributions to Foreign Policy, as well as work in the South China Morning Post, East Asia Forum, The Diplomat, CNA, and Singapore’s Lianhe Zaobao. He also writes periodically for The Conversation, with editorially invited pieces among his contributions.

He has provided expert commentary to The Sydney Morning Herald, ABC News, Newsweek Japan, Svenska Dagbladet (Swedish Daily), Sveriges Radio, Weekendavisen (Danish Weekly), De Tijd (Belgian Financial Times), Japan Business Press, and has participated in live interviews on ABC Radio and other platforms.

He is Associate Review Editor for The Social History of Alcohol and Drugs (University of Chicago Press) and serves as a peer reviewer for both academic and popular journals.

He is proficient in English, Japanese (JLPT N1), Korean (TOPIK6), and Chinese.
