Michael Stewardson

Professor Michael Stewardson is CEO of the One Basin Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) since its establishment in July 2022. The One Basin CRC’s 86 partners include research, industry, government and community organizations who are collaborating to build a more productive, resilient and sustainable Murray–Darling Basin.

Over the last 30 years, Professor Stewardson has been a leading researcher in water and river basin management and river science. He has led projects to monitor and evaluate environmental flows, improve evidence-based practice in environmental management of rivers and understand the benefits to stream health of harvesting urban stormwater.

Professor Stewardson previously led the Environmental Hydrology and Water Resources Group at University of Melbourne. In 2019, he established the Mallee Regional Innovation Centre and was the Centre’s Director for its first three years. He has advised sate and federal governments in water and river management and currently sits on the Advisory Committee for Social Economic and Environmental Science with the MDBA.
