Michael Bohlander

Michael Bohlander has been the International Co-Investigating Judge in the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia since 2015. From 2017 until 2022, he was also on the roster of international judges at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague. He joined Durham University in 2004, having previously been a member of the German judiciary since 1991.

He has published over 20 books, more than 160 chapters and articles, and over 60 book reviews on German law, English and Welsh criminal law, comparative and international criminal law, the judiciary and the legal profession, Islamic law, and SETI.

His current main focus is on the relationship between SETI as well as the scientific debate about UAP, and human law in the wider sense, including issues such as the implications of a hostile first contact for human rules of warfare, on the peaceful use of outer space, or the question of which global values humanity would be willing to compromise for access to advanced alien technology.

Together with Andreas Anton and John Elliott, he is currently conducting a global online survey entitled: "Contact with Extraterrestrial Intelligence - A study of projected perceptions and reactions among the world’s societies"

The survey can be accessed in English, French, German and Spanish at: https://www.dur.ac.uk/departments/academic/law/news-and-events/news/2024/july/academics-at-durham-law-school-and-st-andrews-university-launch-global-online-survey-/

The survey will be open until 15 October 20204.
