Merin Thyagu Pereira

(She/Her)

I am a highly motivated and dedicated life sciences researcher with a strong passion for teaching and a focused interest in environmental science, fermentation technology, and enzyme engineering. I joined the University of Westminster in 2022 to pursue my Master’s in Applied Biotechnology and have since progressed to my current PhD in “Biodegradation of PET plastics and upcycling of degradation products into bioplastics,” reflecting my commitment to academic and research excellence. My research is driven by a strong commitment to developing sustainable solutions through innovative approaches in plastic biodegradation. My work is conducted under the expert guidance and mentorship of my Director of Studies, Professor Godfrey Kyazze, whose scientific expertise and support have been instrumental in shaping the direction and quality of my research.

I am actively engaged in the University of Westminster academic community as a DRDP Doctoral Research Representative, DRT Champion, and Research Officer, where I demonstrate strong leadership, responsibility, and organisational skills. In addition, I am passionate about scientific communication and teaching, with experience in presenting complex scientific concepts to students in a clear, engaging, and accessible way. I am also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), awarded by Advance HE in recognition of attainment against the Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning support in higher education (Fellowship reference: PR320059), July 2025 .

Beyond my academic and professional work, I enjoy good books, art, crafts, and gardening. I have a deep appreciation for music, nature and travelling, which continually enrich my curiosity, creativity, and understanding of the environment.
