- ARC Future Fellow and Matthew Flinders Fellow in Chemistry, Flinders University
A/Professor Melanie MacGregor is an ARC Future Fellow in material science. Her translational research focuses on understanding the interactions between nano-objects and their surroundings, for application in the biomedical, environmental and energy fields. A/Prof MacGregor's works include industry driven projects where the nano-objects investigated are nanoplastics, conducted in close partnership with end users such as the NSW EPAs, but also, clinicians, industry, and academics from complimentary disciplines.
She leads several initiatives in this area, such as microplastics analysis in wastewaters, developing plasma-based techniques to remove nanoplastics from water and investigating their toxicity on human cells.
She is the leader of the newly established Nano and Microplastics Research Consortium, an initiative supported by Flinders college of science and engineering which aims to bridge Science, Industry, Policy, and community to remediate micro and nanoplastic pollution
Melanie's translational research has been recognised through several awards, including the 2016 Engineers Australia John A. Brodie Medal for achievement in Chemical Engineering, the 2017 Winnovation awards in the Engineering category, and a 2018 SA Young Tall Poppy Science Award. In 2019, she was also selected to participate to the SuperStar Of STEM program hosted by Science Technology Australia which aim to promote gender equity and diversity in STEM carriers.
