Md Akhtaruzzaman

Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman is ranked the number one researcher in Finance in Australia by The Australian Research Magazine in both 2024 and 2025 and is listed in the Stanford–Elsevier Top 2% Scientists (2024). He is the Head of the Discipline of Accounting and Finance at Australian Catholic University (ACU) and served on ACU’s Academic Board.

He has extensive industry experience, including as a board member of a credit rating company. He served as Managing Director of a risk management consulting firm in Singapore and previously held the role of Assistant Vice President at a commercial bank. He worked as a consultant on asset and liability management in banks, Basel II/III, risk management in banking, and advanced Excel modelling in Australia, South Africa, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Nepal, and Bangladesh. He is a Chartered Accountant (CA) and a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA).

He received the Best Paper Award at the 81st Academy of Management Annual Meeting (2021) for “Culture and Mixed Signals: Does ESG reduce risk everywhere?”. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Accounting Literature (ABDC A-ranked) and is an Associate Editor of Economic Analysis and Policy, The Journal of Risk Finance, and the International Journal of Financial Studies.

He is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and has received several learning and teaching awards for excellence, including the 2020 ACU Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning, the 2022 FLB Innovation Award, and the Executive Dean’s Innovation in Assessment Practices Award (2020). He is a regular media contributor on contemporary issues, and his interview about the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank was broadcast on SBS prime-time news at 6.30 pm.
