- Senior Lectuer in Digital Journalism, De Montfort University
Max is a senior lecture in Digital Journalism, an associate of the LSE's Civil Society and Human Security Research Unit, and the founding editor of the LSE’s Euro Crisis in the Press blog which regularly publishes contributions on European politics. He holds a PhD in Media and Communications, a MSc in Politics and Communications (both form the LSE), and a BA in Politics and International Relations (Kent).
His research centres on international broadcasting and public diplomacy, examining different deployments of media as instruments of soft power. More generally, he studies political communication, and the ways media can enable political participation. For instance, the role of digital media in the political upheavals of the Arab Spring. He also has an interest in the way media can shape collective identities and transnational politics (for example through a European Public Sphere).
He is currently also working on projects that deploy machine learning techniques, the technology on which most AI is built.
Max has held academic posts in the UK and Sweden.
