Matthew Moran is Professor of International Security at Queen's University Belfast. He is also Director of the Queen's Institute for Peace, Security and Justice. Prior to this he served as Head of the Department of War Studies at King's College London.
Professor Moran’s research interests are driven by a desire to understand the social and political influences underpinning significant security-related events and his interests span four main areas: 1) the causes of collective disorder and rioting; 2) the nature and drivers of coercive influence in the international system; 3) the role of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in international politics; 4) understanding the nature and evolution of open-source material for investigative and intelligence purposes. He is a the author or editor of 8 books - including a new study of chemical weapons use in Syria – and numerous academic articles.
His academic work seeks to be academically rigorous but also policy-relevant, and Professor Moran has a strong track record of engagement with the policy community through executive education and professional development. This includes working with the Foreign and Defence Ministries of several governments both in an advisory capacity and on the design of bespoke executive education courses. His public engagement includes contributions to outlets such as BBC News, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Prospect, Le Monde Diplomatique, The Conversation, France24, and Le Courrier International.
