Matthew Casey (Casey-Pariseault) is an Associate Clinical Professor of History in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies where he teaches at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Matthew's research focuses on religion as a force for social and political change in modern Latin America. His current project, The Religious Question: Catholics, Protestants, and Politics in Twentieth-Century Peru, uses internal church documents, testimonies, and missionary correspondence to follow Catholic and Protestant activists as they mobilized across the polarized political spectrum throughout the twentieth century. His research has appeared in academic journals and volumes in both English and Spanish. Matthew's public-facing work has been featured by news outlets including Salon, San Francisco Chronicle, Religion News Service, Indian Country Today, and NPR's Latino USA.
Dr. Casey is an affiliated faculty member with ASU's Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict. He has served on conference committees for the the American Academy of Religion and the Latin American Studies Association. In addition to archival research, he has conducted ethnographic fieldwork on public religious practice in the United States and Peru in collaboration with funding agencies that include the Henry Luce Foundation and the University of California Humanities Research Institute.
