- Professor of Psychology, University of Sheffield
I have held academic posts in UK Universities since 2001, and have been a full Professor since 2012. My research specialism is addiction, particularly alcohol and gambling, with a focus on the psychological mechanisms that underlie addictions, and the implications for treatment. I have published over 200 peer-reviewed articles including recent perspective pieces on the limitations of the brain disease model of addiction (Lancet Psychiatry, 2025), and the importance of context in addiction-related decision-making (Psychopharmacology, 2024). I recently co-edited a book on the brain disease model of addiction (Routledge, 2022). My work has been funded by the Medical Research Council, National Institute for Health Research, and charities.
