- Professor of Nursing, Duquesne University
In August of 2012, Dr. Mary Ellen Smith Glasgow became a professor and dean at the School of Nursing. During a portion of her present employment at Duquesne, she also held the position of Vice Provost for Research, where she provided strategic leadership in the areas of research infrastructure, biosafety, policy creation, faculty development, and recognition.
Dr. Glasgow has also held positions at Drexel University as Chair of Undergraduate Programs, Associate Dean for Nursing, Undergraduate Health Professions, and Continuing Education. She completed a fellowship at the Mid-America Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration (HERS) at Bryn Mawr College. Additionally, Dr. Glasgow was chosen to be an Executive Nurse Fellow of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for 2009.
As dean, she oversaw a major expansion in research and scholarship as well as a rise in enrollment and NCLEX-RN results. As a national leader in nursing education, Duquesne University School of Nursing is renowned for promoting social justice, digital technologies, and producing graduates with strong ethical reasoning abilities. She oversaw the creation of the nation's first dual undergraduate program in biomedical engineering and nursing in 2015, and in 2017 she oversaw the creation of a doctorate in nursing ethics.
Dr. Glasgow is a national and international innovator in the nursing and health professions. She established the Pathway to Health Professions Program, the BSN Accelerated Career Entry Program, the BSN Co-op Program, and other progressive educational initiatives at Drexel. In addition, she developed one of the biggest online nursing schools in the nation and pioneered online pedagogy. Prior to this, she was the Associate Editor for the Leadership and Professional Development section at Oncology Nursing Forum.
Two of the five books she co-wrote have earned the American Journal of Nursing Book-of-the-Year Award in first place. Dr. Glasgow has given presentations both domestically and abroad and has written over 100 articles and book chapters. She is recognized as a Distinguished Fellow in the National Academies of Practice, a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, and an NLN Academy of Nursing Education Fellow. She was awarded the Gwynedd-Mercy University Distinguished Alumni Award, Villanova University College of Nursing Alumni Medallion for Distinguished Contribution to Nursing Education, and University of Pittsburgh Lifetime Achievement Award. She recently worked as a member of the National Nursing and Midwifery Quality-Care measures Project Team and the Health Service Executive, which developed quality measures for Ireland.
Currently, Dr. Glasgow is a member of the boards of UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and Shadyside Hospital, and the Center for Healthcare Solutions, formerly known as the Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania. In addition, she chairs the National Advisory Council of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at the University of California, Davis.
Dr. Glasgow has years of expertise in nursing practice and education, having taught graduate and undergraduate nursing students. Dr. Glasgow's excitement and love for nursing also allow her to have a beneficial influence on Pittsburgh's and the surrounding area's nursing education and healthcare system.
