Research in comparative legal history, especially the history of procedural law and constitutional law. For example judicial independence, the rule of law, and oaths of office. Also research in legal symbols, heraldry and iconography, and orders of knighthood. He teaches comparative legal history and civil procedural law.
His research interests include legal history, European legal history, comparative legal history and heraldry.
