- Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader in Fine Art , University of Lincoln
Martin Lang is senior lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Lincoln, where he teaches both practice and theory. Prior to working at Lincoln he taught on the BA Fine Art and BA History & Philosophy of Art programmes at the University of Kent and on the Foundation Diploma at University for the Creative Arts.
Martin trained as a painter before completing a PhD in History & Philosophy of Art, researching militant forms of art activism. His research focuses on political aesthetics with particular attention to how art is framed, contested, and regulated within cultural and political discourse. He analyses pressures placed on artistic autonomy – through instrumentalisation, securitisation, and other forms of cultural control – and develops critical frameworks for understanding the status of art in an age of post truth. His interdisciplinary collaborations with political scientists and psychologists extend this work into debates on disinformation and contested truth.
He is an artist and a writer. As an artist, Martin has exhibited internationally and in the UK he has shown at the ICA, Arcadia Missa, and the Creekside Open. His practice based research explores digital manipulation, conspiracy narratives, and unstable truths, reflecting his broader interest in contemporary image cultures. His writing has been published in art magazines like The Jackdaw and Trebuchet (for whom he is a regular contributor), as well as in academic journals including, Art & the Public Sphere, The International Journal of Social, Political and Community Agendas in the Arts, and Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy.
