- Professor of Gravitational Astrophysics and Cosmology, University of Glasgow
I am Professor of Gravitational Astrophysics and Cosmology in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow, where I was first appointed a faculty member in 1998, and where I am currently Vice-Principal and Clerk of Senate.
I am a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, and was a founding member of the LSC Education and Public Outreach Group, and later Head of the LSC's Communications and Education Division - responsible for coordinating our global gravitational-wave outreach activities and detection announcements.
I am a passionate enthusiast for public engagement in science and was previous a Public Engagement Fellow for the Science and Technology Facilities Council, leading an international programme of outreach with schools and the public entitled "Exploring the Dark Side of the Universe". I am a Fellow (and former Council Member) of the Institute of Physics, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's National Academy. I am currently Vice-President (Public Engagement) of the RSE. In 2015 I was awarded an MBE for services to the public understanding of science in the Queen's New Year Honours list.
