Mark has a degree in law from Cambridge and postgraduate qualifications in sociology (DPhil, Oxford), criminology (MPhil, Cambridge) and education (GradCertTertEd, MEdStud, Flinders). Between 1988 and 1992, Mark lectured in the United Kingdom. He moved to Flinders University in 1993 and was Winthrop Professor of Law and Criminology in the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Australia 2010-16 and Dean Learning and Teaching and professor at Murdoch University (2019-21). He is an adjunct professor at UWA and Senior Consultant at Australasian Human Research Ethics Consultancy Services (AHRECS) and Higher Education Evaluation & Development (HEED) Consulting.
Mark is author of South African Political Exile in the United Kingdom published by Palgrave Macmillan (1999) and Ethics and the Governance of Criminological Research in Australia (NSW Government, 2004), author (with Iain Hay) of Research Ethics for Social Scientists: Between Ethical Conduct and Regulatory Compliance (Sage, 2006) and co-editor of International Victimology (Australian Institute of Criminology, 1996), Criminal Justice in Diverse Communities (Federation, 2000), Crime and Justice in Australia (Lawbook Company, 2003), Crime and Justice: a Guide to Criminology (Lawbook Company, 2006), and Research Ethics and Integrity for Social Scientists: Beyond Regulatory Compliance (Sage, 2015).
Mark undertakes consultancy in higher education, research ethics and research integrity. He has acted as a consultant to various institutions, agencies and NGOs, including the Commonwealth, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australian Governments, CSIRO and the National Health and Medical Research Council, the European Research Council and to universities and private higher education institutions in Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.
Mark's current research interests include: research ethics in criminology, socio-legal studies and, more generally, in social science, and higher education policy and practice.
