Dr Marion Stell is a historian who investigates the social and cultural history of sport, feminism and queer history. She is the author of a number of popular books including the classic 'Half the Race: A History of Australian Women and Sport'; and 'Pam Burridge', a biography of the world champion surfer; 'Girls in Sport: Swimming'; and 'Girls in Sport: Soccer'. She is the co-author of 'Women in Boots: Football and Feminism in the 1970s'.
She was the foundation curator of the permanent exhibition 'Sportex' at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra; and the 'Eternity' and 'Women with Attitude' exhibitions at the National Museum. She has been a member of Football Australia's Panel of Historians since 2012.
Her latest book is 'The Bodyline Fix: How Women Saved Cricket', UQP, 2022. It was shortlisted for Book of the Year in the Queensland Literary Awards, 2023.
She is the joint holder of the Rainbow Research Fellowship 2025 with the State Library of Queensland, investigating 'Queering the Lens: Cross-Dressing in Family Photograph Albums'.
