Mario Toledo (PhD Universidad de Santiago de Chile, 2006) is a full time professor at the
Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME) of the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (USM), Valparaíso-Chile, where he has been elected as a Senior Advisor of the Institution. Additionally, he is Director of the Master Program in Energy Economics (MEE), and Head of the Renewable Energy Laboratory of the DME. Moreover, he served as Academic Advisor of the Institution from 2016–2018, and Head of the DME from 2014–2018.
His research is aimed at the advancement of the thermal and chemical engineering sciences and mainly applied to combustion technologies. This comprises high-temperature heat/mass transfer phenomena and multi-phase reacting flows, with applications in fuels production (H2, Syngas) and thermochemical processing, CO2 and CH4 storage, and solar energy systems. He is founder and leader of the Combustion Group at the DME, and the “QUEMPIN” spin-off created under the umbrella of USM, which develops porous media combustion technologies for furnaces (especially oriented to bakeries) and has been selected for the MassChallenge 2020 (a global, zero-equity startup accelerator, founded in Boston, Massachusetts). Additionally, he established a new academic program (Diploma in Energy Management, oriented to professional engineers) and two combustion laboratories which are intensively used for undergraduate and graduate teaching and research.
