Mariia Pronina has worked on first language acquisition and social and cognitive
factors that shape it. She has investigated L1 prosody acquisition, focusing on
developmental trajectories of intonation in preschool children (Frontiers in Psychology) and
on the prosody–pragmatics interface and its connections to other linguistic and cognitive
skills (Language Learning and Development, Oxford University Press). She has also written
a review on the acquisition of suprasegmental phonetics and phonology by bilingual children
(Cambridge University Press) and has previously worked on the prosody of Russian, her L1
(Russian Linguistics). More recently, her research has focused on the heritage language
acquisition and maintenance. In her current project funded the Spanish State Research
Agency (Juan de la Cierva Fellowship), she is exploring the variability on the prosodic level
found in multilingual children living in Spain with Russian as heritage language and the role
that the language background variables, including language input, and linguistic attitudes
play in this process.
