Marie Bonnin is a researcher in marine environmental law at IRD, focusing on the protection of marine environments through legal frameworks. Based at the European University Institute of the Sea (IUEM), she frequently collaborates with researchers in natural and physical sciences.

Initially working on the legal translation of marine ecology research, Marie now explores the applicability and effectiveness of legal rules aimed at environmental protection.

Geographically, her work has primarily centered on marine environmental law in West Africa, where she has partnered with universities and research institutes in Senegal, Mauritania, and Cape Verde. In recent years, she has expanded her research to include the tropical Atlantic and North Africa.

From 2017 to 2023, Marie served as the main coordinator of the European research project H2020-MSCA-RISE-PADDLE, titled "Planning in a Liquid World." She is also a work package leader for the AIME project, "Artificial Intelligence and Marine Environment."
