Maria Teresa Borrello

Dr. Maria Teresa Borrello is a Pharmacist, Lecturer in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science, and the Programme Leader for the MSc in Cosmetic Science at the University of Sunderland. She leads a dynamic drug discovery research group with a primary focus on chronic liver diseases. Her research investigates the activity of novel compounds aimed at treating liver conditions, particularly exploring the pharmacology of epigenetic drugs and their interactions in complex disease models. Dr. Borrello’s work sits at the intersection of chemical biology, epigenetics, and cellular stress responses, with a specific interest in how endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress contributes to disease progression. By examining the interplay between epigenetic modulation and cellular stress pathways, she aims to identify new therapeutic targets and develop more effective treatments for liver diseases, including hepatocellular carcinoma.
