Maria (Mary) Papageorgiou is a Leverhulme Early Career Researcher at Newcastle University, UK. Prior to this, she taught at the University of Exeter, University College London (UCL), and SOAS University of London. Her research interests include great power politics, IR theory, Sino-Russian relations, and China’s engagement in the Middle East.
She has testified before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission at the U.S. Congress, produced a report for the UK Ministry of Defence’s Secretary of State’s Office of Net Assessment and Challenge (SONAC) on China’s engagement in MENA, and contributed to the UK’s Strategic Defence Review (SDR) regarding China’s economic coercion tools. In addition, she was selected at REAIM Summit hosted by the South Korean government to discuss AI national strategies of China and Russia.
Her work has been published in several academic journals and think tanks, and she has provided media commentary for several outlets (NBC, Associated Press, South China Morning Post, among others)
