María Pilar Martínez-Costa, PhD, is a Full Professor of Journalism at the School of Communication, University of Navarra. Her research focuses on the processes of innovation, production, distribution, and commercialization of digital media, as well as trends in audio and radio storytelling in the digital environment.
Awarded a PhD in Public Communication (1994) for groundbreaking research on the evolution of European radio broadcasting. Her dissertation, which was subsequently published and won a prestigious award, explored the potential of digital satellite radio in the last century. She is the Coordinator of the Digital News Media Group. She has published over 60 articles in indexed national and international publications, including Journalism, Journalism Practice, Analisì, Plos ONE, Media and Communications, Hypertext, Comunicar, Communications, Profesional de la información, Revista Latina de Comunicación Social, Comunicación, Estudios del Mensaje periodístico, International Journal of Hispanic Media, Revista de la Asociación Española de Investigación de la Comunicación, Comunicación y Sociedad, Recherches en communication, Anagramas, Doxa, Global Media Journal, and The Radio Journal, among others. She has authored over 40 book chapters published by renowned publishers. She has authored or co-authored 3 books and 5 edited volumes. Additionally, she has presented invited papers and communications at over a hundred national and international conferences.
She has participated in 15 competitive national and international research projects, serving as Principal Investigator in 3 of them: Native Digital Media in Spain: Typologies, Audiences, Building Trust and Keys to Journalistic Sustainability (PID2021-122534OB-C22); Native Digital Cybermedia in Spain: Characterization and Trends (RTI2018-093346-B-C3); and Uses and Informational Preferences in the New Media Map of Spain (CSO2015-64662-C4-1-R MINECO/FEDER).
She is a member of the European Communication Research and Education Association, the Spanish Association for Communication Research, the Spanish Society of Journalism, and the Groupe de Recherches et d’Etudes sur la Radio. She has supervised 6 doctoral theses, all of which have received the highest marks. These theses have led to publications, and their authors are now faculty and researchers at national and international universities.
