Malcolm Campbell

Born in Montréal and raised in a small city in Ontario, Malcolm studied genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Guelph and University of British Columbia. Following post-doctoral work in Toulouse, France and Raleigh, North Carolina, Malcolm had a faculty position at the University of Oxford, combined with a tutorial fellowship at Brasenose College, for 8 years.

Malcolm worked at the University of Toronto from 2004 to summer of 2015, where he held professorial appointments in the Department of Cell & Systems Biology, the Faculty of Forestry, the Department of Biological Sciences, the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, and the Graduate Department of Environmental Sciences. He was Vice Principal, Research at University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus from 2009 until June 2015.

In June 2015, Malcolm joined the University of Guelph, where he was a Professor of Molecular & Cellular Biology. Administratively, he also served as Vice-President Research for University of Guelph, providing support for the research enterprise for the entire university community and external stakeholders.

In 2024, Malcolm was appointed Provost and Vice-President Academic at Laurentian University. He works with a fantastic team to help Laurentian University realise the incredible potential of its academic mission.

In the past, Malcolm’s research team focused on genome biology, with a particular emphasis on tree genome function. His lab’s research explored the role of the epigenome in conditioning plant responses to the environment.

Malcolm lends his experience to editorial boards, scientific and non-scientific advisory boards, as well as governmental, non-governmental and community organisations.

In his spare time, Malcolm is often seen running with his whippet, listening to great podcasts and music, and thinking. Malcolm attributes any success to his fantastic family, especially his wonderful partner and three amazing kids.
