Mahamadou Bassirou Tangara

Mahamadou Bassirou Tangara is an associate professor at the Université des Sciences Sociales et de Gestion de Bamako (USSGB). His research focuses on poverty, the informal economy, conflict dynamics and the impact of public policies on development, paying particular attention to Mali’s socio-economic challenges. Within the framework of the CLEAR programme (Climate, Environment and Agroecology Research Policy Support), he explores the interactions between conflict and the environment. His extensive field experience in Bamako, Ségou, Mopti and several other Sahelian countries has given him an in-depth understanding of local realities and socio-economic dynamics. From 2020 to 2024, he participated in the Pilot African Postgraduate Academy (PAPA) at Point Sud in Bamako. His current work examines the economic governance of armed groups and social transformations in times of conflict, focusing on emerging forms of resilience and agency among local populations. He is an associate researcher and coordinates the Zabantu Research Group, which is dedicated to studying the nexus between the economy, conflict and the State.
