- Senior Lecturer Environmental Marine Science, University of Hull
Marine and Fisheries Scientist with interests in crustaceans, fisheries science and management and statistical programming. Gradually realising that spreadsheets don't tell the whole story.
I have been involved with inshore fisheries locally along the Yorkshire coast for the last 15 years - assisting in negotiations between fishers and developers or carrying out research in partnership with them. At a UK level I have worked with the UK Shark Tagging 2000 scheme, advised Holderness Fishing Industry Group to deal with developments, assisted IECS in developing a monitoring strategy for Flamborough Head No Take Zone and supervised a review of fishing activity in Grimsby for Poisidon Consultants. At a European level I have assisted the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers. I've worked with Scottish fishermen in developing a management plan for the Fladden Nephrops fishery and locating cod hotspots off the west coast.
I have edited for the J. Crustacean Biology, PeerJ and the Marine Stewardship Council and put together a volumes on Nephrops norvegicus (langoustine, scampi, prawns) and Marine Managed Areas for Advances in Marine Biology. I have served as a reviewer for Marine Scotland and the European Commission REA on fisheries related grants. I recently co-wrote a book for UGs on basic statistics.
I was the university of Hull lead on an FP7 project (NEPHROPS) worth Euro 500 000. The total project was worth over Euro 3 million and is a collaboration between various SMEs and Hull, Galway, Swansea, Gothenburg and the Technology Institute in Norway. Currently I'm working with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust on developing an aquaculture training site and re-establishing native oysters to the Humber Estuary, developing a shark tagging scheme for the North Sea and trialing a benthic ROV for ecological assessment.
