- NHMRC CDF Fellow, Senior Research Fellow, Head Metabolic Crosstalk Laboratory, The University of Melbourne
I am a NHMRC Career Development Fellow and Head of the Metabolic Crosstalk Laboratory at the University of Melbourne, with a focus on the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. I did my undergraduate studies in Germany (Philipps University Marburg) and my PhD in Australia at the University of Wollongong, graduating in 2011. Since then, I focussed on understanding the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), initially at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Sydney, 2011-2013), followed by UNSW Sydney (2013 - 2016) and Monash University Melbourne (2016 - 2018). My research program focusses on identifying novel therapeutic targets for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes.
I have an international reputation as expert in the diabetes and NAFLD field, which is evidenced by repeated invitations to present my research at international meetings (e.g. 2020 Keystone Symposia Canada, 2019 Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories New York), substantial editorial responsibilities (journals - Biochemical Pharmacology, Frontiers in Endocrinology, Biology) and grant review (NHMRC, Diabetes Australia), among others.
