Madeline Mavrogordato, PhD, is Director of the Education Policy Innovation Collaborative (EPIC) and Professor of K-12 Educational Administration and Policy in the College of Education at Michigan State University. She is an expert on education leadership and policy, including policy design and implementation and how to leverage policy to expand educational opportunity for underserved students. She also studies how to recruit, retain, evaluate, and support educators and leaders who are prepared to serve the new demography of American public schools. Dr. Mavrogordato is especially well known for her scholarship at the intersection of education policy and multilingual students classified as English learners.
Dr. Mavrogordato partners extensively with district and state policymakers, such as the Michigan Department of Education, to formulate education policy and advance education reform. In addition to producing numerous reports and briefs for policymaker and practitioner audiences, her research has appeared in a range of academic publications including Educational Researcher, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, Educational Administration Quarterly, and Education Finance and Policy. From 2019-2024, Dr. Mavrogordato served as co-editor of the American Educational Research Journal, the flagship journal of the American Educational Research Association. Her research is grounded in her experience as a bilingual teacher in South Texas along the Mexican border and the San Francisco Bay Area. Dr. Mavrogordato received her PhD in Leadership and Policy Studies from Vanderbilt University.
