Madeline Bassnett

(she/her)

I specialize in early modern food studies, ecocriticism, climate studies, and women's writing. I'm the author of Women, Food, and Governance in Early Modern England (Palgrave, 2016), which examines how sixteenth- and seventeenth-century women use language and depictions of food practices (such as hospitality, gift exchange, and charity) to discuss domestic and political governance. I recently published an essay collection--In the Kitchen 1550-1800: English Cooking at Home and Abroad--co-edited with Hillary Nunn (Amsterdam University Press, 2022). My current SSHRC-funded project is Weather Networks: Climate Change and Community in England's Little Ice Age. Part of this project includes the early modern weather database, Weather Extremes in England's Little Ice Age 1500-1700 (https://weather-extremes-in-englands-little-ice-age-westernu.hub.arcgis.com).
I am also the author of a poetry collection, Under the Gamma Camera (Gaspereau Press, 2019).
