Lorena Nunez Carrasco

In my current research I explore the linkages between migration, and health, focusing on illness experiences including HIV/AIDS. I have researched African Initiated Churches and published on faith, illness, subjectivity and the urban space. I am interested in the topic of death in the context of migration and displacement, and at present, I am researching experiences of mourning in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This forms part of a broader NRF-funded research project on the social impact of South Africa's response to COVID-19, of which I am the Principal Investigator. Linked to my research trajectory in South America and Southern Africa, my long-term project examines and compares migration, gender and reproductive healthcare in Chile and South Africa. I aim to contribute to knowledge production from an emancipatory perspective grounded in the Global South.
