Lorena Balardini is a sociologist, holds an MA in Social Science Research, and is a PhD candidate in Social Sciences at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Buenos Aires (UBA). She is an Associate Lecturer of Social Research Methodology at the Faculty of Law (UBA) and a member of the interdisciplinary group “Social Rights and Public Policies,” based at the Ambrosio L. Gioja Research Institute of the same university.
Between 2020 and 2024, she served as Technical Director of Registries and Databases at the Ministry of Women, Genders and Diversity of Argentina. Previously, she coordinated the Databases and Statistics Team at the Office of the Prosecutor for Crimes against Humanity (Office of the Attorney General) and led the Research Area at the non-governmental organization Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS).
She currently works as an expert consultant in database design and indicator development for the measurement of social phenomena from a Human Rights and Gender and Diversity perspective, collaborating with organizations such as the World Bank, the United Nations Population Fund, and the Spanish Cooperation Office for the Southern Cone. She has previously carried out similar work for the University of Oxford, City, University of London, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, George Mason University, the MERCOSUR Institute of Public Policies on Human Rights, and the Pan American Health Organization, among other institutions.
Her research interests include transitional justice, particularly the monitoring and evaluation of trials for crimes against humanity in Argentina and Latin America. She also focuses on the measurement and recording of phenomena such as gender-based violence and equality and diversity policies.
Her publications include articles in journals such as International Studies Quarterly, International Journal of Transitional Justice, Latin American Research Review, and Transitional Justice Review, as well as book chapters published in Argentina and abroad.
