Professor Lisa Toohey focuses her teaching and research in three main areas: international trade law (the rules that govern how countries trade with each other), legal design (making legal information more user-friendly), and dispute resolution (helping people and countries solve their disagreements).

In 2020, Lisa was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Senior Scholar award, funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, to pursue her research in the US at the University of Texas at Austin. She has also served on the Executive Council of the Society of International Economic Law, been a Senior Fellow of the Institute of International Economic Law at Georgetown University in Washington DC, is an elected member of the Asian WTO Research Network, a founding member of the UNSW China International Business and Economic Law (CIBEL) Centre, and a founder and past President of the Australasian Dispute Resolution Network.

Professor Toohey's academic expertise is complemented by significant private sector experience. She practiced commercial law at Corrs Chambers Westgarth in Australia and Baker & McKenzie in Vietnam, specializing in WTO law, dispute resolution, and intellectual property and telecommunications law. Her practical experience extends across East, Southeast, and Central Asia, where she has undertaken dispute resolution and WTO projects funded by the Australian, US, and Canadian governments, as well as international organizations such as the Asian Development Bank.
