- Assistant Professor, Research Methods, School of Social Sciences, Heriot-Watt University
I am an Assistant Professor in Research Methods, and a member of the Doctoral Centre and the Intercultural Research Centre at the School of Social Sciences, Heriot-Watt University. My background is in critical literary theory, languages and intercultural studies and my research is interdisciplinary and focuses on a number of related topics that might be summed up as ways of approaching issues of sameness and difference in multicultural contexts. Among these is situating migration in a wider historical and societal context, including attention to lived experiences and representations of migration, critical theoretical and postcolonial perspectives on migration, and autoethnographies of migration. A Syrian with a lived experience of migration, and following work with the Syrian community in Scotland, I have developed a keen interest in socio-political and cultural issues that affect migrants and refugees’ sense of identity and belonging in the UK.
I hold a PhD in Languages (HWU), an MSc in Translating and Conference Interpreting (HWU) and first class honours diploma in Critical Literary Studies and BA in English Literature from Syrian universities.
