Les Oxley is Professor in Economics at the University of Waikato's Management School; Adjunct Professor at Curtin University and an Affiliate at Motu.
He is an Elected Fellow (since 2006) of the Royal Society of New Zealand (FRSNZ).
His research interests include Circular Economy and sustainable economic development; economic wellbeing; time series econometrics; financial econometrics (especially as it relates to cryptocurrencies); cliometrics; economic history; the economics of innovation; energy economics.
He was chair of the Business and Economics Panel of the 2018 Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) New Zealand research assessment exercise. He is co-Editor-in-Chief and joint founding editor of the Journal of Economic Surveys, member of the Board of NZIER and Governance Group of the National Science Challenge, "Ageing Well". He has received 7 Marsden-funded grants and published on a wide range of topics. He is currently engaged in research on the Circular Economy and sustainable economic development; the effects of COVID-19 on financial markets; the effects of colonization on the wellbeing of all New Zealanders.
