Kya Raina Lal is a Fijian lawyer and academic, with maternal links to Oneata, Lau, Fiji. Most recently, she has joined the School of Law at the Auckland University of Technology as a Lecturer. She has spent the past decade in Fiji working as a Barrister and Solicitor at Lal Patel Bale Lawyers, most recently as a Senior Associate. She has an extensive practice background, appearing before Tribunals through to the Fiji Court of Appeal. Her areas of special interest include criminal law and defence, environmental law, and climate change law, with a broader practice covering civil, commercial, and family law.
Kya holds a Bachelor of Arts in Pacific Studies, a Bachelor of Laws, and a Master of Laws with First Class Honours in Environmental Law from the University of Auckland. She is admitted to practise in Fiji, New Zealand, and New South Wales.
Alongside her legal practice, Kya is a PhD Candidate in Law. Her doctoral research explores cannabis offending and carceral alternatives in Fiji, drawing on her passion for criminal defence work. She has also taught at the University of the South Pacific as a sessional lecturer with the School of Law since 2020.
