- Senior Research Fellow in Population Health, University of Auckland, Waipapa Taumata Rau
My research focuses on the political economy of public health nutrition policy, including the impacts of international free trade and investment agreements on governments' 'policy space' (i.e. regulatory freedoms and scope of regulations available) to enact domestic regulation of harmful products such as unhealthy foods and beverages. I conduct primarily qualitative research.
Prior to my PhD, I completed a Masters of Science at the University of British Columbia, in which I conducted field research in southern Ecuador to assess the quality of food environments following the 2008 Constitutional adoption of the Right to Food Sovereignty, and identify the remaining policy priorities to achieve healthy and equitable food environments. My BA is in Geography, where I specialised in health geography, i.e. the spatial distribution and determinants of health and disease.
