Dr Kellie Toole teaches Criminal Law, Sentencing, and Evidence and Advocacy at the University of Adelaide, having practiced criminal defence law in South Australia. Her main research interests are at the intersection of criminal law, human rights law and environmental law. She has published in the areas of marital rape, defences to homicide and the prosecution of domestic violence offences. Her PhD investigated independence and accountability in executive decision-making with a focus on the Offices of Director of Public Prosecutions, and has been published as Prosecuting Crime in the Public Interest: How Tension between Independence and Accountability Threatens the Rule of Law in Australia (Hart Publishing, 2024). She teaches and researches military disciplinary law through the Research Unit on Military Law and Ethics (RUMLAE), mainly undertaking empirical research with incarcerated veterans.
