Kate Astall is a qualified solicitor and Senior Lecturer at Leeds Law School. She holds a first-class degree in Politics and went on to study the Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course before embarking on a successful career in legal practice.

As a solicitor she was involved in a number of high-profile criminal cases. She specialised in complex crime and criminal appeals, civil liberties work and serious personal injury (often related to military personnel). Kate's work saw her regularly instructed in cases which were heard in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. She also made numerous applications to the European Court of Human Rights and has prosecuted on behalf of national sports bodies in connection with child protection cases.
